CALGARY, Alta. (June 28) - Saskatoon's Brett McCormick passed Jordan Szoke two turns from the finish to win Sunday's third round of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship, presented by Turple Bros. Ltd. and Suzuki, at Calgary's Race City Motorsport Park.

The rider of the Team Suzuki / Blackfoot / Picotte Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000 nipped inside Szoke's Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-10R and then held him off in the run to the finish line to claim his second straight win by just 0.080 secs.

The Brantford, Ont. racer started from pole position and led the first 21 laps of the 22-lap race around the 3.2km (2.0-mile) track with McCormick never more than a second or two behind.

"It was a pretty long race and I just wanted to study him and not show him anything," said McCormick, who extended his lead in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship to 11 points over Szoke, 157-146. "On the last lap he left the door open and I had some room so I took a chance."

The bikes of Szoke and McCormick made contact as McCormick made his inside pass.

"I'm a little annoyed right now," said the three-time defending Parts Canada Superbike Champion. "The bike was perfect. I'm mad at myself for leaving the door open. I know rubbing is racing but I consider that a little much."

Kevin Lacombe finished third on the Team Toyota Yamaha / OTSFF Yamaha YZF-R1 after a race-long battle with fellow Yamaha rider Andrew Nelson. The Granby, Que. racer was third at the end of the opening lap but accidentally hit his kill switch at the start of the second and dropped back to fourth behind Alex Welsh.

Lacombe got back ahead of Welsh's Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-10R on lap four only to come under pressure from Nelson, who grabbed third place on lap 14. But Nelson got a pair of false neutrals at the start of lap 17 and Lacombe got back ahead, holding off Nelson's Nelson Racing Yamaha YZF-R1 by just 0.602 secs.

"It was a really intense race," Lacombe said. "I was getting really exhausted at the end but I put my head down and pulled it out."

Despite having to settle for fourth place in the race Nelson maintained third in the Parts Canada Superbike standings with 96 points.

"I had the pace and the bike to finish third," said the Kars, Ont. rider, who worked his way up from sixth on the opening lap. "I guess it was not meant to be, unfortunately. It's a lot of work for fourth place."

Local ace Clint McBain of Cochrane, Alta., who won this race last year, battled serious front suspension problems to finish fifth on his Suzuki Dealers / Acceleration Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000.

Maple Ridge, B.C.'s Steve Crevier placed sixth on the Deeley Racing Powered By Buell / Buell 1125R, passing Uxbridge, Ont.'s Welsh five laps from the finish.

Despite incurring a five-second jump start penalty Banff, Alta.'s Peter Holzinger took eighth place behind Welsh on his Zinger Racing / Toloco Fibreworks Suzuki GSX-R1000 and 14-year-old Royce McLean of Coaldale, Alta. was the top rookie finisher in ninth on his Team Toyota Yamaha / OTSFF Yamaha YZF-R6.

Calgary's Dave Stokowski completed the top 10 aboard the Blackfoot / Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-10R after holding off McLean for the first half of the race and another Calgary rider, Michael Zottmann was 11th on the Mountain Toys Racing / Majik X Suzuki GSX-R1000 after suffering a late race fall while running eighth.

In other action at Race City, Szoke held off McCormick in another close battle for the Yoshimura Pro Sport Bike win. Szoke led every lap on his Kawasaki ZX-6R with McCormick right behind aboard his Suzuki GSX-R600. The Saskatoon rider also made a move for the lead in the second last corner, only this time he slid wide after getting ahead and Szoke was able to repass him and win by 0.085 secs.

"I thought he might try me going into there but I knew he would have to go pretty deep," said Szoke, who was on his back-up bike after crashing his primary mount in morning practice. "The bike was phenomenal. It isn't really much of a 'B' bike."

With the win Szoke regained the points lead over McCormick, 155-146.

Szoke's team-mate Welsh was third on another Kawasaki ZX-6R for his best career Pro finish and McLean finished fourth on a Yamaha YZF-R6 after passing Crevier's Buell 1125R two laps from the end.

Cochrane, Alta.'s Cody Matechuk led all 14 laps to win the Armour Bodies Amateur Sport Bike race by 13.105 secs. on his Suzuki Dealers / Acceleration Racing Suzuki GSX-R600.

West Kelowna, B.C.'s Marcel Irnie took second on his Irnie Racing Kawasaki ZX-6R after a race-long battle with the A. Perusse Kawasaki / Kawasaki ZX-6R of Longueuil, Que.'s Sebastien Tremblay, who placed third.

After his second win in three races Matechuk now leads Tremblay by 21 points in the Amateur Sport Bike standings, 155-134.

Steven Nickerson of Hamilton, Ont. also led all the way to win the 10-lap Honda CBR125R Challenge event at Race City. Warman, Sask.'s Bodhi Edie placed second, 6.280 secs. behind and Karl Robitaille of Ste-Julie, Que. took third.

Edie now trails Nickerson by 11 points in the standings, 156-145 heading into Monday's second half of a doubleheader for the class, which will be held at the Varsity Chrysler Speed Park adjacent to Race City.

Raphael Archambault of St-Colomban, Que. won his first Suzuki SV650 National Cup round by 16.272 secs. over Philippe Masse of St-Dominique, Que. Polesitter Jeremie Hade Precourt of Granby, Que. took third.

Archambault picked up the Tirox Won Bigtime Award for enjoying the largest margin of victory of the weekend and took over the class points lead.

Action from Race City will be shown on TSN HD and TSN on Tuesday, July 21 at 1:00 p.m. Eastern and repeated on Saturday, July 25 at 4:00 a.m. Eastern. The races will also appear in Quebec on RDS. Please check local listings for dates and times.

Team Suzuki Blackfoot Picotte looking forward to a competitive weekend.
 
Team Suzuki Blackfoot Picotte Racing is looking forward to an exciting weekend of competition and pushing the envelope. After an impressive winning streak at Circuit ICAR, Brett McCormick has become the new points leader and threatening opponent for competitors such as Jordan Szoke who has been a podium finisher and record breaker for several years now.
 
Team Manager Pascal Picotte feels very positive going into the weekend: "we are working towards Saturday morning's qualifier. We used today as a valuable practice. There are some new parts we are experimenting with and we are making some changes to the bikes for tomorrow such as working with the geometry for better cornering. The weekend is looking great and we are looking forward to it!"
 
McCormick felt confident on the 3.2 km track (2.0 miles) during Friday's practices at Race City in Calgary, AB. Throughout the day he was 2nd fastest, right behind Szoke. The afternoon practices were particularly close. McCormick completed his fastest lap in Pro Sport Bike at 1:17.973 in his 7th lap, only tenths of a second shy of Szoke's fastest lap time. Then in the Superbike practice, McCormick was again only tenths of a second behind Szoke with a fastest lap of 1:15.500.
 
"I know this weekend is going to be tough, but I've had a great start here. Today I completed my best lap times on this track so I'm definitely feeling good. Plus, I have the team to back me up - now it's just up to me," states McCormick.

McCormick claims his first double-win on the Canadian circuit.
 
After three days of pooling their resources and giving a commendable effort in practice, Team Suzuki Blackfoot Picotte Racing reaped the rewards by taking their first two wins in both Pro classes of the 2009 Parts Canada Superbike Championship.
 
In Saturday's qualifying, Brett McCormick, the team's 17-year-old rider from Saskatoon, SK, secured Pole Position for Sunday's main event. McCormick began the race third off the start, close behind Kevin Lacombe and Jordan Szoke. Lacombe went down in lap 2 and McCormick was able to sneak past his two competitors by taking the inside line. Once in the lead, McCormick was able to put his head down and ride. "Because it was still early on in the race, my focus was to relax and get some laps in. Szoke was pretty close behind so I had to be steady and consistent."
 
In the Pro Sport Bike class, McCormick snagged another win with his fastest lap time of 1:25.336 in lap 4. "In this race I got a way better start," states McCormick. "I got the lead right away. After that, I just had to keep the same mentality as in the Superbike race - focus and put in some good laps. Everything worked out and I finished seconds ahead of Szoke."
 
Picotte explains that, "in the shop and at home we work so hard to improve the bikes and develop our team. It is so nice to be out here and see the accomplishments we have made. I am very pleased with the team results - the mechanics, everyone worked flawlessly. Also, it was great to have Mike Fitzgerald from Ohlins here to help us. He has an incredible amount of expertise from working with teams in the States and it was fantastic to have some of his knowledge trickle down into our racing."
 
Pat Chambers, Team Owner from Blackfoot Racing expresses his feelings about the weekend: "I'm very proud of what we've done. I'm so proud of the kid and how the team worked together. It was an incredible weekend - this is what racing is about. We were all there, including Brett's family, to share in his success. After eight years of racing, this was our first dominant weekend taking first in both classes. Brett has certainly proved that he is capable of winning races."
 
"We couldn't ask for anything better," states Mark Jeffery, Suzuki Canada's Racing Coordinator. "To be leading the championship in both classes after only the 2nd Round is outstanding - mission accomplished. At this point, we are glad that Brett has found his edge at a fast, smooth pace and he is still in his comfort zone. As a one-rider team, our priority is to ensure that Brett arrives safely back to the pits."
 
In conjunction with his success, McCormick fully appreciates the support of the team: "when I come off the track, I explain to Pascal and Mike Fitzgerald what is happening with the bike and they take the information and use it to improve the bike. Without them, I wouldn't be where I am."
 
McCormick now leads the Superbike series with 104 points, just ahead of Szoke at 98 points.
The team is looking forward to Round 3 in Calgary, AB. To prepare himself, McCormick is heading home to get some rest and train for the next round. "This week I have a bunch of exams to finish up Grade 12 so I will be busy with that," he explains, "but I will definitely spend some quality time cross-training on my motocross bike and hitting the gym. I like the Calgary track a lot and I'm sure we will be able to do well."

McCormick Posts Perfect Weekend on Öhlins in Parts Canada Superbike
Hendersonville, North Carolina: "The Kid" from Canada, 17-year-old Brett McCormick, crowned a perfect weekend with his win in the Circuit ICAR, Parts Canada Superbike Championship race, after setting the fastest times in Friday and Saturday practices, earning pole position, setting the race's fast lap, and leading the most laps. If that's not perfect enough, McCormick also earned the pole in Pro Sport Bike and won that race, too, after leading every lap.
 
With the help of Öhlins USA's "Thermosman" Fitzgerald, McCormick's GSX-R1000 and GSX-R600 rolled off the Team Suzuki/Blackfoot/Picotte Racing truck ready to race at this Mirabel, Québec, circuit. After just a click-click here and a turn-turn there, the Öhlins suspension components were in tune for Circuit ICAR's 2.8 kilometer (1.7 mile), airport-derived racetrack. Following McCormick's dominating weekend in the second round of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship, "The Kid" is now leading the points in the Superbike and the Pro Sport Bike Championships.
 
"Thermosman" Fitzgerald, Öhlins USA Road Race Manager, said, "The Circuit ICAR is flat and short but it has 14 turns and many are tight. Having a properly handling bike here pays off hugely in lap times. McCormick really benefitted from the set-up in the race because, while other riders were having their tires go off, he was able to manage his wear. So this was a great weekend for us, being able to show off the value of a properly tuned suspension; it's not just about speed, it's about being able to maintain speed."
 
McCormick's point total in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship is at 104, with Jordan Szoke in second place with 98 points. In Pro Sport Bike, McCormick has 101 points, with Jordan Szoke in second at 99 points. The seven-round Parts Canada Superbike Championship series next goes to Race City Motorsport Park, outside Calgary, AB, June 25-28.

MIRABEL, Que. (June 14) - Saskatoon's Brett McCormick completed a dominant weekend at Circuit ICAR with victory in Sunday's second round of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship, presented by Moto Journal.

The 17-year-old started from pole and led 15 of the 16 laps around the 2.81km (1.74-mile) 14-turn circuit on his Team Suzuki / Blackfoot / Picotte Racing / Suzuki GSX-R1000 to score his second career national Superbike win and take over the lead of the Parts Canada Superbike series standings.

Three-time defending series champion and opening round winner Jordan Szoke of Brantford, Ont. placed second on his Canadian Kawasaki Motors / Kawasaki ZX-10R, 2.218 secs. behind McCormick. Andrew Nelson of Kars, Ont. was third riding the Nelson Racing / Yamaha YZF-R1.

"This is a huge win for me. I'm really at a loss for words," said McCormick, who earned his first Superbike national win at last year's season finale. "It's not like last year at the last round, where Jordan was riding for a championship. He gave me a fight today."

McCormick was third off the start behind the Team Toyota Yamaha / OTSFF / Yamaha YZF-R1 of Kevin Lacombe and Szoke. But Lacombe crashed on lap two and McCormick was able to get around Szoke at the same time.

Szoke managed to close back in on the Suzuki in the closing stages of the race but was delayed while working through lapped traffic on the penultimate lap.

"I settled into a nice pace and I didn't have to work too hard for a while," said McCormick, who set the race's fastest lap at one minute, 25.337 seconds on lap three. "My front tire was going off a bit near the end but the bike was set-up well enough so I could get around it."

With his perfect weekend of claiming pole position, leading the most laps and earning the race win McCormick leads the Parts Canada Superbike Championship standings for the first time in his career with 104 points to the 98 of Szoke.

"I made a mistake when Kevin crashed," Szoke said. "I did a double downshift and went into first gear instead of second and Brett was by both of us. I got a gift from Kevin but I couldn't take advantage.

"We've won a lot of championships though and we're not done yet."

Nelson moved into third when Lacombe fell and stayed there the rest of the way to score his first career national Superbike podium.

"By lap five my tires went off and I was just trying to be careful the rest of the way," the 26-year-old said. "But I'm stoked with my first podium and hopefully it's the first of many more."

Six-time Canadian Superbike champion Steve Crevier of Maple Ridge, B.C. finished fourth on his Deeley Racing Powered By Buell / Buell 1125R after passing Clint McBain just two laps from the finish.
 
McBain, from Cochrane, Alta., settled for fifth on his Suzuki Dealers / Acceleration Racing / Suzuki GSX-R1000.

Sixth placed went to the second of the Canadian Kawasaki Motors / Kawasaki ZX-10Rs of Uxbridge, Ont.'s Alex Welsh, who held off a race-long challenge from 14-year-old Royce McLean of Coaldale, Alta. McLean was the top finishing rookie on his Team Toyota Yamaha / OTSFF / Yamaha YZF-R6.

Karl Daigle had been part of this battle but the Granby, Que. racer dropped back in the closing stages to an eighth place finish aboard the A. Perusse Kawasaki / Kawasaki ZX-6R.

Ste-Adele, Que.'s Jean-Francois Cyr was ninth on the CyrRacing / Honda CBR600RR after passing the Blackfoot / Canadian Kawasaki Motors / Kawasaki ZX-10R of Calgary's Dave Stokowski two laps from the end. Stokowski rounded out the top 10 finishers.

In other action at Circuit ICAR, McCormick led every lap of the Yoshimura Pro Sport Bike race on his Suzuki GSX-R600 to claim his first career victory in that class and take over the points lead from Szoke, who finished second on his Kawasaki ZX-6R, 3.061 secs. behind.

Nelson again completed the podium on his Yamaha YZF-R6.

"It was a pretty awesome race and the team's been working really hard," said McCormick, who now has 101 points to Szoke's 99. "I busted out a bit of a gap and was able to put down some fast laps early."

Lacombe was fourth on his Yamaha YZF-R6 and Welsh took fifth aboard a Kawasaki ZX-6R despite a late charge from Crevier and McLean.

Longueuil, Que.'s Sebastien Tremblay outduelled opening round victor Cody Matechuk to win the Armour Bodies Amateur Sport Bike race. Riding the A. Perusse Kawasaki / Kawasaki ZX-6R Tremblay took the lead from Matechuk (Suzuki Dealers / Acceleration Racing / Suzuki GSX-R600) on lap seven of the 14-lap race and held on to beat the Cochrane, Alta. rider by just 0.342 secs.

Jeffrey Dion of Granby, Que. completed the podium aboard his Robitaille Racing Kawasaki ZX-6R.

Rob Busby of Brantford, Ont. earned his second straight Suzuki SV650 National Cup win of the season, beating St-Colomban, Que.'s Raphael Archambault by 7.651 secs. Jeremie Hade Precourt of Granby, Que. completed the podium.

Warman, Sask.'s Bodhi Edie won the Honda CBR125R Challenge race by 10.634 secs. over Hamilton, Ont. racer Steven Nickerson. Edie earned the Tirox Won Big Time Award for enjoying the largest winning margin of the day. Pickering, Ont.'s Ryan Roche placed third.

Natalie-Catherine Provost of Laval, Que. won the Pro Honda Oils Women's Cup race on her Honda CBR600RR.
